Proud Traditions
In 1939 the Congress established a United States Coast Guard Reserve
which was administered my the Commandant of the Coast Guard. The group was
composed of unpaid volunteer U.S.Citizens who owned motorboats or yachts.
In 1941 a separate military Coast Guard Reserve was created. The
original volunteer organization was renamed the U.S. Coast Guard
Auxiliary.
The job of the Auxiliary was to indoctrinate small craft operators in
safety requirements and to assist in some Coast Guard missions concerned
with safety of navigation.
In 1996 the role of the Auxiliary was expanded to include any Coast
Guard function other than military or direct law enforcement missions.
Today, the Auxiliary is the nonmilitary, volunteer portion of TEAM
COAST GUARD, working alongside the active duty Coast Guard, civilian Coast
Guard employees and Coast Guard reservist.
